``Survivor'' creator Mark Burnett believes his show is immune to the current reality TV slump. ``I think we're different,'' he said Wednesday. ``We're the original. And I think we operate at a higher level.''

Survivor Cast To Be Announced September 21, 2001
Surviiivor.com reports that The Early Show will announce the new cast of Survivor 3 on Tuesday, September 25, 2001 (barring any breaking news, of course). According to their message board, this announcement originated from CBS Spokesman Chris Ender.

CBS lights torch early with ``Survivor'' special August 30, 2001
CBS has found a way to squeeze more mileage from its hit reality franchise ``Survivor.''

The network has greenlit an hourlong ``Survivor'' special that will air Thursday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. -- a week before ``Survivor 3: Africa'' bows in the same slot.

Details of the special are still being worked out, but one insider said the hour will provide a look at ``how to play the game of 'Survivor.''' It will also offer an extensive preview of ``Survivor 3,'' with a peek at the show's new cast and location.

A couple of days ago, a new contestant list began circulating among various Survivor webmasters and message boards. After a couple of days of research, it's looking like it's legit, so here it is:

First Survivor III Contestest Identified? August 10, 2001
Internet message boards are chatting away about the possible first confirmed identity of a Survivor III contestant. The Portland Oregonian has reported that a local resident will definitely be on Survivor, and Internet sleuths are reporting the woman to be one Lindsey Richter (possible picture at right.)

Jeff Probst Stung By Scorpion On S3 Set August 4, 2001
Three weeks into the third, African-set edition of CBS' "Survivor," the natives are getting restless. On day 21 (the third day of what will be episode 7), Survivor's khaki-tastic host Jeff Probst faced off against an opponent with more venom than outback Überbitch (and current Playboy cover girl) Jerri Manthey. "I got stung by a scorpion," Probst confesses to Entertainment Weekly via e-mail.

'Survivor: Africa' Gets October Premiere; 'Survivor 4 ' Airs in March 2002 July 24, 2001
CBS has announced that 'Survivor: Africa,' the third edition of the reality show, premieres on October 11. The show will run uninterrupted until January 10 when it will wrap up with a two-hour finale. At least that's the plan for now.

Residents in Protest Over Survivor 3 July 14, 2001
Controversy continued to rage yesterday over the shooting of Survivor 3 in a game reserve along the Isiolo-Samburu border, as residents from Samburu's Archer's Post trading centre staged a protest on Friday morning.

Councillor Fabin Lelosori told journalists the movie firm was working without their permission. "We strongly condemn this action on our land without entering any agreement with us or paying any money to our council," he said.

Mr Lelosori said the shooting of Survival Series Three was being done in the Lodungo'kwe area. He said he had briefed the council on the matter and that they were to conduct a special meeting to discuss it today."

Survivor Cast to Arrive in Shaba July 8, 2001
Kenya's "Daily Nation" reports that the 16 Survivor Cast members are set to arrive in Shaba on Sunday, July 8, 2001. It claims that filming will begin 3 days after their arrival.

Important notes for spoilers: Daily Nation originated the article about bandits attacking the production crew (found earlier in this news guide) which has now been denied by CBS execs. The Daily Nation is not known for it's accuracy, and therefore, this timeline may not be correct.

Kenya Guerrillas Attack 'Survivor ' Crew July 4, 2001
A gang of about 10 armed guerrillas reportedly ambushed a truck that was traveling from the show's production camp to Isiolo, a town outside the Shaba National Reserve, where producers are getting ready to film the show's third installment.
