John has rejected a $33 million offer to serve on American Idol's judging panel, Access Hollywood reported Wednesday, adding it is unknown if the deal would have been for one season or multiple editions of the Fox reality series.

A Fox representative offered "no comment" when contacted by Access Hollywood about the John being offered the job, while a representative for the singer was unavailable for comment.

Cowell inked a deal with Fox in January that will end his American Idol judging role after the currently-airing ninth season while also launching his British The X Factor reality competition series for the network in Fall 2011.

TMZ managing editor Harvey Levin subsequently stated John "should replace" Cowell and TMZ also reported that an American Idol source claimed "talk on the set" was that John would be the replacement.

John's representative responded by stating he's "not going to be a judge," however former American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe claimed he was still "absolutely" the best choice.
