Another season of American Idol, another report that Paula Abdul might be replaced.

While Love, the former lead singer of Hole and wife of the late Kurt Cobain, declined to tell Us whether she would just appear in a few episodes of Idol or be a permanent replacement for one of the existing judges, she did confirm that she was contacted by Lythgoe. Love said Lythgoe called her office last week and asked if she had any interest in "sitting in" as a judge on the Fox mega-hit.
"[Lythgoe] called," Love told Us. "He was wondering if I was interested. I thought it was kind of weird but brilliant." Us reported Idol representatives could not be reached for comment to either confirm or deny that Love might be replacing Abdul.
Despite being one of the original Idol judges when the series premiered in June 2002, Abdul is no stranger to hearing rumors that she's being replaced.
In the summer of 2005, speculation ran wild that due to a hit-and-run accident, a rumored drug problem and her alleged relationship with Idol 2 finalist Corey Clark, Abdul would be replaced at the end of the reality series fourth season.
Abdul survived the firestorm with some help from fellow judge Simon Cowell, but during the next season of Idol, Us reported producers considered replacing her with either Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson due to Abdul's bizarre on-camera behavior and "very difficult" personality behind-the-scenes. That speculation proved short-lived when, only days later, Abdul signed a new three-year contract in March 2006 to remain on Idol.
Why Idol's producers would consider the controversial Love -- a repeated substance abuser who has spent time in multiple rehabilitation programs and was released from a court-imposed six-month house arrest sentence less than a year ago -- a more stable Idol personality than Abdul was not addressed in the Us report.
