American Idol may reportedly have to choose between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey for its judging panel.

While recent reports have stated Minaj will serve as a new judge on American Idol's upcoming twelfth season, Carey is apparently not okay with it, TMZ reported Tuesday.

When Carey -- who formally signed on as an Idol judge last month following the confirmed departures of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler -- reportedly discovered Minaj was at the top of Idol producers' lists to join her on the panel, she hung up the phone.

According to TMZ sources, Carey was "led to believe" she would be -- similar to Lopez -- the only woman on the judging panel. In addition, the sources also suggest Carey isn't pleased Minaj is 13 years younger than her.

If Minaj and Carey do both end up as judges, American Idol producers reportedly believe it would be a mistake to have two women and one man on the panel, which would make it necessary to add a fourth male judge to even things out.

According to prior reports, Latin artist Enrique Iglesias, country singer Keith Urban, rapper and music producer Sean "Diddy" Combs, singer and actor Nick Jonas, and singer Pharrell Williams have all been considered to judge Idol's next edition -- some celebrities further along than others in the talking and negotiating process.
