Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo reportedly have split and ended their high-profile romance.

Despite calling it quits, the sixth-season American Idol winner and Derulo still care about one another very much and plan to remain friends, E! News reported.

According to multiple sources, the split was mutual, which likely comes as a surprise to fans since Derulo just recently told the website he had plans to pop the question to his girlfriend "when the time is right."

On Valentine's Day, Derulo gave Sparks 10,000 orange roses -- a gesture which trumped Kanye West's gift of 1,000 roses for his now-wife Kim Kardashian.

Sparks, 24, and Derulo, a 25-year-old R&B and pop singer, reportedly began dating in September 2011. Their relationship, however, wasn't confirmed until Derulo spoke up in January 2012.

From that point forward, the couple had never been shy about their love. Whether it be photos, music videos or press interviews, they had always been open about their strong feelings for each other.

Most recently, Sparks and Derulo wore matching white outfits to the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, which took place late last month. Sparks had also told E! News she planned to travel with her man during his upcoming "Talk Dirty" tour.

Last year, Sparks starred in Derulo's music video for his popular song "Marry Me." The storyline in which Derulo was shown proposing to Sparks sparked engagement rumors that neither party necessarily shot down.

The video was "about Jordin, actually," Derulo admitted to E! News last year around this same time.

"And it's talking about how amazing it will be when I get down on one knee and it will be the greatest moment of my life. You can't fake anything because true love is true love, and that's the basis of our relationship."
