Jennifer Hudson, an Oscar nominee and a Golden Globe award winner for "Dreamgirls," says she was "abused" on the U.S. TV show "American Idol."

"On 'American Idol,' you go through this mental thing; you've got to get yourself back together," People magazine quoted Hudson as saying in the new issue of Essence. "You've been abused, misled and brainwashed to believe whatever they want you to think."

Hudson, nominated for a supporting actress Oscar for her performance as Effie in "Dreamgirls," won a Screen Actors Guild award Sunday to go with her Golden Globe win in January.

She suggested that acting chops helped her deal with here "American Idol" experience.

"You become a character," she said. "I just knew I had to sing my way out of it."
