'Idol' winners Ryan Malcolm and Kelly Clarkson remain 1-2 in Canada single sales

By Wade Paulsen, 11/03/2003

Canadian Idol winner Ryan Malcolm retained his position atop the Nielsen SoundScan Canadian Singles Sales charts for the week ended October 26 ... and once again, American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson remained close behind.

Ryan's ViK. debut single, "Something Good," holds the top spot for its fourth straight week. Meanwhile, Kelly's single "Low," on ViK.'s sister label RCA, is second for the second straight week -- although this week, it is tied with Nickelback's "Someday." The only other Pop Idol related songs in the Top 25 are American Juniors' "One Step Closer," which is #18 in its 10th week on the chart, and Clay Aiken's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," which has now dropped to #23 in its 20th week on the chart.

Meanwhile, Ryan has been moving forward with his debut CD, now entitled Home and due to ship on Dec. 9, for ViK. Among the songwriters contributing the 13 tunes to the effort are legendary Guess Who and BTO songwriter/guitarist Randy Bachman (who is also shopping a jazz album, as well as his son Tal's new CD), Dan Hill (infamous for "Sometimes When We Touch"), Kim Bingham, Edmonton songwriters Bobby Cameron ("October Skies") and Greg Johnston ("Crash and Burn"), and others.

Ryan will also be performing "O Canada" (in both English and French) at the Canadian Football League's championship game, the Grey Cup, on November 16 in Regina, Saskatchewan. We hope he dresses warmly. We also expect Ryan to make at least a brief appearance on Fox's American Idol Christmas special, which will be aired in both the U.S. and Canada. This may, in fact, be the first time that much of North America has a look at Ryan.

For those of you outside the Great White North who don't want to wait for the holiday special, Ryan's video for "Something More" is included on Ryan's official Website.
