Creator and lead judge Nigel Lythgoe subsequently expressed uncertainty about when the show's seventh season would air.
"I still don't know if [Season 7] is going be in the summer or in the fall next year," he told E! News in late December.
Last month, Fox and Simon Cowell confirmed a deal that will have him leaving American Idol after its currently-airing ninth season to focus on launching an American edition of his British The X Factor reality competition series for the network in Fall 2011.
At the time, Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly said he was thrilled with the fact that the network will now have American Idol in the winter and spring, So You Think You Can Dance in the summer, and The X Factor in the fall.
"I love the spine of having these shows throughout the year," said Reilly at the Television Critics Association's press tour.
Interested So You Think You Can Dance applicants must be between 18- and 30-years-old on the day they register for auditions and are required to be either a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident of the U.S., or possess a current legal Employment Authorization Card enabling him/her to seek employment freely in the U.S..
