Former American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis was arrested for allegedly beating his kid's mother.

Maroulis was taken into custody Wednesday morning after allegedly throwing the mother of his four-year-old daughter onto the ground and kicking her in the groin, TMZ reported.

According to law enforcement sources, the woman called 911 from their home in Wyckoff, NJ, where Maroulis was arrested and then taken to jail. He was quickly bailed out, however.

In an interesting twist of events, Maroulis claims he was just defending himself against the woman's attack and she injured his right thigh from throwing something at him.

Maroulis' representative told TMZ that the singer did not kick her and the argument only began because he was trying to dump her. The rep insists there is evidence proving the incident was self-defense in Maroulis' case and the woman has a history of violently lashing out.

Maroulis finished American Idol's fourth season in sixth place.
