"Fab Five" from 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy' receive $1 million book advance

By Wade Paulsen, 08/28/2003

Coming soon to a bookstore near you -- lifestyle tips from the "Fab Five," stars of Bravo's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. The New York Post reports that book publisher Random House is forking over a $1 million advance for their book, to be titled Queer Eye for the Straight Guy: The Fab Five's Guide to Looking Better, Cooking Better, Dressing Better, Behaving Better and Living Better.

A spokesperson for Clarkson Potter, the Random House unit that actually won the auction for rights to the book, said that it would contain "edgy yet practical advice" from the Fab Five. Although Clarkson Potter would love to have the book for the lucrative December holiday gift-giving season, it says that the most likely release date for the book is February. Of course, it's possible that a few more of Random House's dollars could change that timetable....

Two questions that were not answered are (1) how much of the book advance and future royalties will actually go to the Fab Five -- Carson Kressley (fashion), Jai Rodriguez (culture), Kyan Douglas (grooming), Ted Allen (food), and Thom Filicia (interior design) -- since the rights to the book were sold by the show's producers and developers, and (2) how much of the book will actually be the work of the Fab Five instead of hired ghostwriters (used for most celebrity books, such as Hillary Clinton's). We'll let you know when we learn those answers.
