Dancing with the Stars has confirmed the reigning champion will miss the ABC ballroom dancing competition's twelfth season so he can make his feature film debut.

"We wish Derek the best as he takes time off from Dancing with the Stars to pursue his film career and look forward to having him return to the show in the Fall," Dancing with the Stars executive producer Conrad Green told Access Hollywood, adding that Hough is expected to return later this year.

The three-time Dancing with the Stars champion -- who has won the competition with Nicole Scherzinger, Brooke Burke and Jennifer Grey -- will reportedly miss Dancing with the Stars to film Cobu 3-D.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Hough will co-star with Asian recording artist BoA in the dance-themed film, which will feature the pair playing dancers from strikingly different backgrounds whose romantic relationship is complicated by an existing rivalry between their brothers' competing dance clubs.

Cobu 3-D is scheduled to begin shooting this spring in Toronto and New York and be directed by Save the Last Dance and Step Up writer Duane Adler. In addition, the Romeo and Juliet-like film is being produced by Robert Cort, who worked alongside Adler on Save the Last Dance, Deadline Hollywood reported.
