The Bachelorette 3 - Episode 6 Summary

'Hometown Horrors' By sorgee
Original Airdate: February 7, 2005

“Jen Scheft began her search for true love with 25 eligible bachelors from all over the country… Now only 4 remain.”

The episode begins with Jen in her loft telling us what we already know: 4 men left and she’s heading to their hometowns. We once again hear about how she feels “these hometown visits are so important because I’m still not sure how I feel about these men and I’m hoping that meeting the families kinda puts things into perspective for me.” (The way this episode is starting out you would think it is a recrap.)

John Paul – Oklahoma City
Ryan – Medford, Oregon
Wendell – Chicago
Jerry – Rochester

John Paul – Jen says that he is more mature than his age, but is he ready to settle down? I think she REALLY wants to know if the fabulous John Paul is willing to settle – on her that is…

The date starts with John Paul giving Jen a pair of crap kickers (AKA cowboy boots). How romantic is that? Nothing says LOVE like crap kickers. Anywho, Jen “ohhs and ahhs”. Jen proudly wears her new boots with her sparkly red blouse. (Nothing says “classy” quite like a girl in a sparkly shirt and boots so, as you can guess, it’s now time to go meet the family. She thanks him for the boots as she continues to ponder the settle question while they head on over to meet JP’s family.

Susie and Paul, JP’s parents, did a good job reproducing. All three sons show potential. JPs is quite a looker and his younger brothers are at the awkward “teen boy” stage, but you can tell that they are going to be hot a little later. (Pick ‘em while they’re fresh…)

Jen meets the family and the visit appears to be going well, but I noticed something odd that Jen didn’t comment on. All the sons used their first and middle names. John Paul I can understand. Jake Ryan is pushing it. However, Jeffrey Conley is absolutely ridiculous. (Geoffrey, maybe? And, I’m not 100% sure about the second name. I couldn’t hear it clearly.) This makes me wonder if “John Paul” will become simply “John” once he gets married and has his own clan. Or, maybe he will be Paul, Jr. Hmmm. It’s something for Jen to ponder.

Back to the visit: We have the usual sports talk that happens in family’s that like/love sports. Susie pulls Jen inside to talk. Susie feels it is destiny and slips in that she wants grandbabies followed up with a good dose of “John Paul would be always be good and true to whoever he marries.” Susie is selling her son like a NYC street vendor sells fake Gucci bags.

Well, that’s the first 5 minutes of the show.
JP and Jen head on over to JP’s house and she is pleased with his “appointments.” “Ahhh. It’s so nice.” As the ace kicker, JP introduces Jen to Wade, the head chef at his restaurant. Wade cooks for them. You can tell that Jen is thoroughly impressed. Jen makes it a point to ask if Wade cooks for him every night. JP says, “no.” Jen implies that it might not be such a bad thing if he did. You can see JP mentally add, “hire full time chef” to his to-do list.

Over dinner JP asks Jen if she thinks he would get along with her family. She says, “yes” and also says that their families would get along well. JP pushes and asks for similarities. The chit chat slows and JP asks Jen if she would like to go outside for dessert. They head poolside fireplace and enjoy more talk. JP outright asks if Jen could see herself there and in his life. She says absolutely. He says, “I could see you fitting in here so easy, it’s scary.” For dessert, they kiss. This is going to be a VERY hard date to top.

Ryan – The date starts with ice-skating and then moves to conversation with a hot beverage. Ryan says he is “an excited nervous” to have her meet his family. Poor guy. I wish he had a crystal ball so that he could at least have an idea of what is about to happen.

They pull up to your basic ranch and then they walk into the house and Jen meets the parents, Scott and Barbara and the little sister, MacKenzie. The parents spend almost the entire visit talking about their recent trip to Thailand. You can tell that everyone is a bit nervous and uncomfortable. In private, Jen makes it known that she found the situation to be “weird.” Well, I found it to be weird, too. Guess Jen is a better woman than me. I would have left. She stayed and listened. Good for her. The family has a cat. The cat had the good sense to stay outside. Guess it had already heard enough about Thailand.

Finally, they eat “Barbaritas” which is a custom Mexican spread that mom makes. They ask if Jen likes Mexican food and somehow that turns the conversation back towards Thailand.

Somehow Ryan and his dad end up drinking beer and talking by themselves in the backyard. Thailand doesn’t even come up once. Amazing. Ryan professes his care for Jen.

Cameras cut back into the house where everyone is there. Mom tells Jen about signing a bathroom wall when she was in Mexico. You can tell that Jen is bracing herself to have to hear all about Mexico, but the family surprises her by showing her a bathroom in the house that, over the years, has been signed by family and visitors. Jen thins it’s cool and signs the bathroom. I’m thinking that this has got to be the worst date ever if the best thing about it was signing a bathroom wall. However, I haven’t seen the rest of my show.
