The eleventh-season American Idol champion successfully underwent his kidney surgery yesterday and is currently recovering nicely, TMZ reported Thursday.

"Surgery went well. He's resting," Phillips' representative told People.

Phillips had to go under the knife to remove large kidney stones that couldn't be passed naturally, a congenital condition which caused his right kidney to basically stop functioning. The singer's operation, which took place at a Los Angeles hospital, reportedly took almost seven hours.

According to TMZ, Phillips' surgery was initially scheduled for last week but postponed because he came down with a high fever as a result of a bad sinus infection, leaving doctors unable to operate.

Phillips underwent eight different surgeries for his kidney issues during his run on American Idol. The singer's father, also named Phillip Phillips, told People that Idol viewers didn't even get to see his son's full potential in the competition because he was constantly feeling under the weather.
