Mel Owens' The Golden Bachelor season has tarnished the franchise, according to The Golden Bachelorette star Joan Vassos.

Joan replied, "I like when there isn't drama, and I've heard that over and over again. It has its own little place in Bachelor world, and I like that it has its own little place."
Joan appeared to be saying that a villain doesn't belong on the Golden franchise, which was created to be emotional and heartwarming.
"It's what they are looking for when they go to that place, and now, that place has been kind of uprooted a little bit, and now it has paint splashed on it," Joan explained.
"It just isn't as pure as it was, and I'm not sure it will ever go back to being pure again. And I'm worried once drama is introduced, then all of a sudden, it's okay now, and I hope that that is not the case."
Joan and Ben discussed how Mel's The Golden Bachelor season "feels very much" like a regular The Bachelor season, in a negative way, because of the lack of depth and petty drama.
"The Bachelor seasons do better than The Bachelorette seasons because people like having the women in the storyline because they are so open and giving of themselves. [They] tell about themselves and are wanting to talk," Joan explained to Ben.
But Joan said Mel's cast of senior ladies "really haven't done that" that much.
"So it also feels like a Bachelor season because of that," Joan continued.
"I feel like we're lacking all of those backstories. I feel like the only one I really know, right now, is maybe Debbie... and maybe Cheryl, a little bit, because she had a one-on-one date."

Joan suggested that those heartfelt storylines and backstories are probably missing because of Nicolle's antics.
On last week's episode of The Golden Bachelor, Nicolle boasted about how she was "dating America" -- and not Mel -- and that most of the women were going to have "Real Housewives status" after the show.
Nicolle was also shown telling her fellow bachelorettes that she was hoping to expand her influencing and wellness career with the fame she gains from The Golden Bachelor.
"She started rubbing people the wrong way... I think she is just so very un-self aware," Joan said.
"She doesn't really see reality, and she thinks they all like her, I think. And I think they're all rolling their eyes when she walks out of rooms after she says these crazy statements."
Another shocking statement Nicolle had made was that the Season 1 The Golden Bachelor cast of ladies weren't very attractive.
"I think she just wants to feel like she has an upper hand, and so she's just poo-pooing everybody else's relationship [with Mel] because she thinks she's for Mel," Joan shared.
Joan added, "I feel like we're going to lose that audience, and we're already worried about that. We are already worried about the Golden audience, and this is just another thing to drive them away."

"I think The Bachelor really suffered when drama became the focus and the story -- and love -- became, kind of, secondary to the overall message," Ben shared.
He added, "I hope the show listens to their audience, because they're not liking the drama. They're not watching the drama.... My wife [Jessica Clarke] watched the Goldens because of the lack of drama."
Ben called The Golden Bachelor's sudden push into drama "a mistake," and Joan replied, "I completely agree."
The blonde beauty reiterated, "And I'm not sure we can go backwards now -- now that we've had drama. I worry a little bit that The Bachelor is worried about its audience... Look who they just cast for the next season of The Bachelorette, someone who is a really controversial figure."

Joan therefore asked Ben, "Are they doing this for ratings? That's what scares me now. If you all of a sudden become a show about ratings, then you lose your purity and you lose why you're really there."
Joan also talked about how none of the women were aiming to be social media influencers when they competed on the first season of The Golden Bachelor.
"The first seasons were about what this [show] is really supposed to be about," Joan said.
"We didn't know about being an influencer. I didn't even know what being an influencer was. I didn't even have Instagram! And I think that was true for pretty much everyone on our show. I think that was pretty much true for all the men that were on my show."
(Joan's The Golden Bachelorette season ended with her accepting a marriage proposal from Chock Chapple, and the couple is still together now).
Joan said "everybody has Instagram now," including her own Golden friends, and so some people may think to themselves, "I can make something out of this."
Joan shared that over time, as a result, "Now we're just going to be like the regular Bachelor and Bachelorettes. We're going to be people going on there for the wrong reasons, trying to be influencers, thinking this is the way we're going to be famous."

"Nobody was there for any other reason," Joan concluded.
