"It is with a heart full of sadness that me and Cortney have decided to separate," Jason told People in a statement.

"We fell deeply in love, and had very much a fairytale story being married as complete strangers in the docu-series, Married at First Sight."

The couple -- who were matched by Married at First Sight relationship experts for an arranged marriage -- tied the knot in March 2014 for the Lifetime reality show's first season.

Jason and Cortney didn't even know each other's names before meeting at the altar.

"We both had such an incredibly magical journey together these past few years, making this that much harder to write and even harder to live," Jason admitted.

"These last few months, we asked for privacy to reevaluate things. It has been a very difficult time for me especially with all the rumors, as well as the public wanting updates about our marriage."

Cortney, 31, announced the pair's split Thursday on Instagram, saying they had filed for divorce in February 2019 following a six-month separation.

"Thank you for respecting our privacy because we both know all the intrigue is just a consequence of the lives we've chosen to lead," Jason continued in his statement to People.

"Although we've decided to go our separate ways, we continue to love and support one another and still share a common goal to remain friends."

The New York firefighter concluded, "I think the best way I could summarize how I feel is through a quote that has stayed with me for some time by Joseph Campell, 'We must be willing to let go of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.'"

Cortney had said in her divorce announcement she and Jason want to "move on in different paths" but the makeup artist still has love for her ex and will always have "a special place in [her] heart" for him.

After choosing to stay together on "Decision Day" at the end of Married at First Sight's inaugural season, Jason and Cortney later starred on Married at First Sight: The First Year, along with fellow Season 1 lovebirds Jamie Otis and Doug Hehner, who are still happily married with a child.

Several other arranged marriages from Married at First Sight have survived and flourished, and Season 8 will air its finale next Tuesday night on Lifetime.

Fans are waiting to discover whether the following four couples choose to stay married or get divorced: AJ Vollmoeller and Stephanie Sersen, Kate Sisk and Luke Cuccurullo, Jasmine McGriff and Will Guess, and Kristine Killingsworth and Keith Dewar.
