The Kardashians have been described as "famous for being famous," but they didn't come all this way without hard work.

Khloe Kardashian got personal with fans when she posted an explanation on her website and app Wednesday as to how her sisters' first DASH store came about.

"We started DASH in 2006 and really struggled for a long time to make it a successful business -- there were months we couldn't pay our bills, and the store didn't turn a profit for years," Khloe, 31, wrote, according to People.

Kourtney Kardashian apparently came to Khloe's rescue after their father, Robert Kardashian, died in 2003.

"I was partying all the time, drinking a lot and sleeping in every morning," Khloe explained.

"At this time, my mom [Kris Jenner] and Kourtney were running their kids store Smooch, and when the space next door opened up, Kourt got it! She saw that I was spiraling and wanted to give me responsibility and a reason to wake up in the morning, so she told me I was going to help her run her new store. Kourt, [Kim Kardashian] and I were the only employees and really had no idea what we were doing."

Khloe, Kim and Kourtney therefore had to teach themselves how to run a business. They read self-help books and turned to successful friends for advice.

"We put everything on Kourt's credit card -- we literally had no money," Khloe said. "The three of us bought all our own inventory, cleaned the store, did our own taxes -- everything. We really fended for ourselves and somehow we just learned."

The girls still weren't making money once the family's reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians first premiered in October 2007 because they had a lot of debts to pay off.

"The store was just breaking even for 6 or 7 years! We didn't make any money, and it was really scary. Kourt and I lived together in an apartment down the street [from the store] and we didn't own any cars, so we didn't have a lot of expenses -- we'd either walk to work or get rides from our friends," Khloe admitted, according to People.

"Everything went into DASH, but we were really determined and kept working at it to get where we are today. Eventually, it paid off. People think that my sisters and I didn't have to work for our money, but we did!"

DASH currently has three locations in New York, Miami and West Hollywood. Although the original store in Calabasas closed in 2012, the business is flourishing. There's even an E! reality show now called Dash Dolls which follows the employees of the Los Angeles store.

"It was really important to my dad that we knew the value of hard work and took responsibility for our own success," Khloe noted. "Kourt, Kim and I definitely put those values to work when we started DASH. I think my dad would be really proud of us."
