More than a year after reports of the project first emerged, Fox Reality has announced that it will The Search for the Next Elvira, a new three-episode reality series that will look to hunt out a handmaiden to assist the famous "Mistress of the Dark" with her Halloween hosting duties, is scheduled to premiere Saturday, October 13 at 12AM ET.

The first one-hour episode of the series will introduce the contestants competing to be crowned the next Elvira, a television personality created and played by 57-year-old Cassandra Peterson.  Her Movie Macabre series -- which offered viewers B-grade or lower horror flicks -- first aired in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, and the character has since spawned several movies and cameo appearances for Peterson and her ghoulish alter ego, hence the search via Fox Reality.

"There are simply too many ghastly engagements for one 'Mistress of the Dark' to entertain," said Elvira. "I am searching for someone to share my tricks with, someone to help spread the Halloween spirit."

Following The Search for the Next Elvira's second episode on Saturday, October 20, those in the studio audience will be able to vote for their favorite contestant who will be chosen as the new "Mistress of the Dark" during the series' live finale on Halloween night.

On Friday, July 13, Fox Reality will host an open "Casket Call" at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA to select the thirteen contestants who will compete for Elvira's crown on the series.

"We are thrilled to hold the 'Casket Call' on Friday the 13th at the Queen Mary a notoriously haunted LA landmark. All walks of life are welcome to see if they have what it takes to become the Next Elvira," said Carol Sherman, executive producer for the series, which is being produced by Natural 9 Entertainment.

The "Casket Call" will conclude with Peterson being crowned "Queen of Halloween" with the search for her replacement as "Mistress of the Dark" officially underway.  Additional information on The Search for the Next Elvira is available via Fox Reality's website.
