A&E Network has formally announced that it has renewed The First 48, a reality series that takes viewers beyond the yellow tape as homicide detectives attempt to solve murders in those critical hours after they occur, for a fifth season.  The new season will premiere on Thursday, January 11 at 9PM ET/PT.

For homicide detectives, tracking leads in the first two days of a murder investigation can make all the difference -- as each hour passes, suspects have more time to flee, witnesses grow more forgetful and crucial evidence has the chance to be lost forever.  In The First 48, which A&E first premiered in June 2004, viewers follow detectives from across America and are granted unprecedented access to crime scenes, autopsies, forensic processing and interrogations.

The fifth season of The First 48 will include top detectives from Miami hunting for a man who may have shot several others behind a barbershop in broad daylight; Memphis detectives searching for suspects in the double murder of a fifteen-year-old girl and her boyfriend; Dallas detectives attempting to unravel the complex life of a young man brutally shot and dumped in a park; Kansas City detectives looking for the killer of a young mother found dead in an alley; and Detroit detectives going head-to-head with a suspect known to have a cache of guns hidden in his house.  Other cases will also be covered in each of the previously mentioned cities.

The First 48, which posted double digit increases in all key demographics in its Summer 2006 fourth season, is executive produced by Laura Fleury and Nancy Dubuc for A&E. The series is produced for A&E by Granada America, and Charles Tremayne and John X. Kim are executive producers. Its senior series producer is Wendy Greene.
