American Idol couple David Cook and Kimberly Caldwell have ended their relationship.

"Kimberly and David ended their relationship just before the holidays. The couple remain good friends and being very private people, appreciate their privacy at this time," Caldwell's representative told In Touch Weekly in a Monday report.

Cook, American Idol's seventh-season champion, and Caldwell, a former second-season Idol finalist, had begun their relationship in May when Cook asked Caldwell out to dinner while she interviewed him live on the TV Guide Channel prior to Idol's seventh-season finale.

"I just got asked out on a date!" exclaimed Caldwell, who was working as a correspondent for the TV Guide Channel's Idol Tonight program at the time.

Last month, Star magazine had reported that Cook was planning to surprise Caldwell with a $54,000 diamond engagement ring from Tiffany's over the holidays, however Cook had denied the report.

"That's hilarious, apparently there's some magazine that has way too much time on its hands, I'm never even been in Tiffany's," Cook told WNCI-FM's Dave and Jimmy radio program during a December 11 appearance at the Columbus, OH radio station's "Jingle Ball" holiday concert.  "Never been there... so [that's] false."

"Not that long, not long enough for an engagement ring," Cook had added when asked how long the couple had been dating.

However according to Cook, the pair was still together at the time of the interview.

"Yeah... we're still together," Cook told the station when he was asked to confirm he was still dating Caldwell.
