Nick Hagelin, a 28-year-old former ballet dancer from Teaneck, NJ, landed in the bottom two with Paxton Ingram, a 20-year-old from Miami, FL, based on home viewer votes cast following Monday night's Top 9 performance show.

After both artists sang a survival song last night, America tweeted via the show's "Instant Save" format to keep Paxton in the competition.

Nick began The Voice on Pharrell Williams' team and ended up on Christina Aguilera's team when he was selected as her "Comeback Artist" of the season. Paxton is on Blake Shelton's team.

Paxton kicked off the elimination format by singing "How Will I Know" by Sam Smith for his survival song. Pharrell said, "That's the way you sing to save yourself," adding that it was a great song choice and he sang with confidence and "zero fear." Adam Levine complimented Paxton for having "triumphed" a tough situation, saying he "plowed his way back up to the top."

Blake then spoke to his artist, gushing about how he's so good and so powerful. Blake said he always manages to make a song his own while still honoring the original artist, so he belongs on the show.

Nick then performed "Change The World" by Eric Clapton. Pharrell explained that while he's obviously got a good voice and can dance, he has the special ability to emote and connect with the audience. Adam admitted he's got a "bright and shining personality," which makes people happy.

Christina then addressed her artist by saying he made her smile on the outside and inside. She noted how it's been an incredible journey getting to know him and he's one of her favorite contestants ever on the show. Christina told America that Nick admiringly puts his wife and child first -- even when the music industry tells him the image "doesn't sell."

Home viewers had a short window to vote for Nick or Paxton to stay on The Voice via Twitter. At the end of the final commercial break, it was a 50% to 50% dead heat between the two artists.

The Voice host Carson Daly eventually announced America had instantly saved Paxton "by less than 100 tweets." Nick was therefore eliminated as the series heads into its tenth-season semifinals next week.
