Showtime's 'Big Brother: After Dark' spin-off to return for ninth 'Big Brother' season

By Christopher Rocchio, 01/09/2008

Showtime has announced Big Brother: After Dark, a live feed program that aired nightly on Showtime Too during this summer's Big Brother 8, will return for a second season when Big Brother 9 premieres on Tuesday, February 12 at 9PM ET/PT on CBS.

Big Brother: After Dark will air nightly from 12AM to 3AM ET beginning February 12 and feature footage from the same live camera feeds that are made available to online subscribers of the show's 24/7 live Internet feeds.

"Big Brother: After Dark was a big success for us at bringing an audience to very late night time periods on SHO2.  This began as an experiment with our friends at Endemol and CBS, and I'm happy that it worked so well for all of us," said Showtime entertainment president Robert Greenblatt.

"I'm amazed at how much curiosity there is about what goes on in the Big Brother house after the lights are out, but what better place to present that than on Showtime where we have a lot of on-air real estate in the wee hours of the morning."

Given the Big Brother house is in Los Angeles, that means After Dark features live coverage of the house's 9PM to 12AM PT happenings.  Similar to the manner in which Big Brother's production staff determines which of the house's dozens of camera feeds comprise the four feeds that are made available for live Internet viewing, a producer determines which camera feed is broadcast on Showtime Too's After Dark

Big Brother 9 -- which due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike is the long-running CBS reality series' first winter edition  -- will use the same three-nights-a-week broadcasting format as the show's summer installments.  In addition to Tuesday night broadcasts, Big Brother 9 will air Wednesday and Sunday night editions at 8PM ET/PT beginning February 13 and 17.

Showtime, a premium cable network, became a CBS Corporation subsidiary when CBS split from Viacom in 2005.
