Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have admitted that their divorce was just a publicity stunt.

"The divorce was real -- just the idea behind it was different than most people's," Pratt told Life & Style. "Divorcing was the only way to keep Heidi's career going because everyone hated me so much. Look at Sandra Bullock -- her divorce from Jesse James was the best thing to happen to her image."

In addition, the former The Hills stars' recent trip to Costa Rica was part of an attempt to land a reality show with the British TV network ITV which would cover their fake split, Life & Style reported.

However, the deal reportedly fell through and the couple called off the divorce and reunited.

According to Life & Style, Montag and Pratt concocted the fake divorce idea after they learned The Hills wasn't being renewed another season and they had blown through the $10 million they had earned during the show's broadcast run.

The former reality stars are now allegedly owning up to their mistakes and considering filing for bankruptcy, however Pratt said the reputation he developed during The Hills has made finding another job difficult.

"I can't make regular money because I was playing such an unlikeable character on TV to keep my checks coming. Who wants to hire the jerk from The Hills?"
