Bravo has announced that it will soon begin production on Shear Genius, a new reality competition series that will pit hairstylists against one another to see who can create the most fashionable coiffure.  Originally announced under the title Top Hair, the eight-episode Project Runway and Top Chef-like series is scheduled to premiere in the spring of 2007.

In each episode of Shear Genius, hairstylists from across the country will compete in challenges that test their creativity and show being a success requires more than just a knack for cutting.  Those who find themselves as potential clients for the hairstylists will range from everyday people to A-list celebrities.

At the end of the competition, each of the contestant's creations will be judged by Sally Hershberger, a highly sought-after and acclaimed hairstylist.  Owner of the New York salon Sally Hershberger Downtown, the Emmy Award-winning stylist has also worked on ad campaigns for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, W, Allure, Vanity Fair, and many more.  Shear Genius will be hosted by former Charlie's Angels television star Jaclyn Smith.

"Our critically acclaimed reality competition series are branded by ultra-talented contestants as well as highly credible hosts and judges," said Frances Berwick, executive vice president of programming and production at Bravo. "We are excited to name the iconic Smith as host and celebrated Hershberger as lead judge as they lend tremendous credibility to the series and to the contestants during their competitive journey."

Production of Shear Genius is scheduled to commence in Los Angeles in the coming weeks.
