'Average Joe' finale draws 17.4 million viewers, leads NBC to record Adults 18-49 Monday ratings

By Reality TV World staff, 12/09/2003

The series finale of Average Joe drew 17.4 million overall viewers and propelled NBC to its highest Adults 18-49 demographic rating with series programming in the Monday 9-11 PM ET slot in more than 10 years.

According to updated in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research for December 8, Average Joe dominated its time period with an 8.8 rating, 21 share among Adults 18-49 and 17.4 million viewers overall. Those results boosted NBC to its biggest Monday Adults 18-49 margin of victory with series programming in the sixteen-year history of Nielsen's current People Meter sample (excluding nights of movie programming). NBC's winning margin for the night is 3.1 rating points (7.9/20 for NBC vs. ABC's second place 4.8/13).

Last night also marked NBC's highest Adults 18-49 rating with series programming in the Monday 9-11 PM ET slot in more than 10 years (since a comedy line-up on April 12, 1993) and the network's highest-rated Monday in 18-49, excluding Olympics, since May 3, 1999 ("Noah's Ark, Part 2").

Average Joe dominated its two-hour time period in all key Adults and Adult Female demographics, outperforming ABC's second-place football telecast by 44 percent among Adults 18-49 (with an 8.8 rating vs. a 6.1) and 1.3 million total viewers (17.4 million vs. 16.1 million).

The Average Joe finale posted Adults 18-49 ratings comparable to other recent blockbuster reality finales, such as this fall's The Bachelor conclusion on ABC (an 8.8/21 on November 19) and the most recent Survivor finale on CBS (8.9/22 on May 11). Joe also easily outpaced last spring's "Bachelor" finale (a 7.2/17 on May 18). Average Joe tied the recent Bachelor finale for the highest reality rating on any network so far this season in 18-49.

A sequel reality series, Average Joe: Hawaii, is scheduled to premiere on NBC Monday, January. 5.
