The Bachelorette star Charity Lawson has opened up about Sean McLaughlin's surprise visit to her hotel room in Louisiana and why she couldn't hand out a rose on the two-on-one date.

On Monday night's episode of The Bachelorette's twentieth season, Charity asked Sean and Tanner Courtad to accompany her on a two-on-one date in New Orleans.

Both of the men were feeling "overlooked" at that point and were longing for validation because hometowns were rapidly approaching and they never got to enjoy a one-on-one date with Charity.

Sean and Tanner therefore appeared shocked when Charity chose not to hand out a rose to either of them, especially Sean, who had bonded with Charity that day and made out with her when Tanner wasn't looking.

"Although the episode favors more momentum with Sean, I personally felt like I had a good time with Tanner as well, which is what made it hard," Charity told Entertainment Weekly of her decision to make the men wait longer to learn their fate in the Season 20 competition.

"I knew what next week held, which was hometowns, so at the point of not having a lot of time, it definitely felt like we were all playing catch up."

The Bachelorette star added, "I wanted to explore past relationships, family dynamics, and where they were with everything within the journey."

Tanner was grateful for more time with Charity because he believed The Bachelorette star was taking their relationship seriously and really wanted to get to know him on a deeper level.

But Sean expressed frustration over the apparent rejection, venting to the cameras, "I am not happy! I don't know what this looks like for us... Now I'm questioning everything. How can I be so sure about something and still have this girl so unsure about us?"

Sean and Tanner were later invited on a group date along with Aaron Bryant and Xavier Bonner.

Sean, however, felt he deserved some answers from Charity, and so he found her in her hotel room prior to the group date.

"I was not expecting to see Sean that day," Charity told EW, "so when he came to my room, I was completely caught off guard."

"I didn't know if he just wanted time or what, but when I realized he essentially was looking for reassurance at that moment, I had to confront my feelings of where I was really at with everything, and that led to an emotional exit between us," she explained.

When Sean got a moment alone with Charity, he shared how he felt passionate about them as a couple and was "in the process of falling in love" with her.

"I don't want you to give up... because I think this is something we should explore further," Sean said. "With more one-on-one time, we could get there."

But Charity disagreed and told Sean that she couldn't give him what he wanted. The Bachelorette star admitted that she had stronger connections that were further along.

"I feel heartbroken. I feel crushed. I feel confused. Dude, I don't get it," Sean said after his elimination.

"I tried everything I could have to express how I felt and why I felt that way, and it just wasn't enough. I'm walking away from here with such incredible feelings for this girl. What happened? I saw a future with her. Oh my god!"

Following the subsequent group date, Charity also chose to send Tanner home instead of making him sit through a Rose Ceremony.

"We gave this everything we got, and I think that's what hurts the most. It sucks because she felt the same way I felt. I know that," Tanner said in his final words.

"She's just got such a big heart, so that's why I was trying to be as strong as possible. I didn't want her to know how much it hurt me. I know it was really hard on her, and it's hard on me too. I said it once and I'll say it every day -- that girl deserves the world. She's something really special."

Charity ultimately chose to give Aaron B. and Xavier hometown dates as well as Dotun Olubeko and Joey Graziadei.

Those hometown dates will be shown on the upcoming The Bachelorette episode airing Monday, July 31 at 8PM ET/PT on ABC.
