The Bachelor star Zach Shallcross has reacted to fans calling him a "boring" leading man of the franchise.

Zach competed for Rachel Recchia's heart on The Bachelorette's nineteenth season last year. While he made it all the way to Fantasy Suites, many viewers complained that they didn't see much of Zach's personality or get to know him.

Zach was therefore a bit of a surprising choice for The Bachelor's Season 27 star. But Zach -- who admitted he was even shocked to have been chosen as the Bachelor -- recently promised fans would get to see his sense of humor and a pretty epic love story this season.

"I thought they f-cked up," Zach joked of his casting during a live episode of the "Click Bait with Bachelor Nation" podcast on February 16, adding how he thought producers' initial text to him sharing the news was "a typo."

Bachelor Nation couple Joe Amabile and Serena Pitt asked Zach how it felt to be called "boring" ever since the September 2022 announcement of his The Bachelor casting.

"I didn't have my phone at the time of the announcement. At that point, it was taken away because there was the possibility of being the Bachelor. So I didn't see the initial fanfare, for good or for worse. I didn't see any of that," Zach explained.

"After the fact, like after filming, I did learn about [people calling me boring]. And I was like, 'Oh, okay! Just watch, though. It gets pretty good.'"

Zach acknowledged he's "not the dude that's going to cause unnecessary bullsh-t," but The Bachelor environment naturally creates drama, twists and turns.

"As is life, you find yourself in unnecessary bullsh-t and it's entertaining," Zach said.

"To be honest, it was a little weird in the beginning and it kind of sucked. You never like to be told you're boring, but then you look on the bright side and you're like, 'Alright, I could be called the as-h-le Bachelor. That could be worse! I don't want to be an as-h-le Bachelor."

Joe pointed out how, historically, The Bachelor or The Bachelorette leads who were boring in the beginning "turned out to be a good thing."

Joe joked with Zach how a star of the show "can only go up" from boring and Zach has been winning people over as the season progresses.

"I don't find you boring at all. I find you to be someone who is very decisive and knows what he wants. In the beginning, of course, that may come across boring," Joe reasoned, "because you're not keeping the people that may make better television."

And Zach noted, "I get that... I know it's a TV show, but I can still make my own decisions at the end of the day."

Zach said it made sense that people called him "a boring Bachelor" choice after Rachel and Gabby Windey's The Bachelorette season because there wasn't "a whole lot shown" of the guys from Season 19.

"I do totally understand where people are coming from, like, 'Who is this f-ck-ng random guy Zach? Why is he the Bachelor? I saw him do one dumb thing on the ship and that's about it.' That was literally my season, and I get it," Zach explained.

He added, "So it doesn't get lost on me."

Zach made it to Rachel's Final 3 bachelors, but he said, "In the grand scheme of the show, [viewers] want to get used to and know the people and the actual characteristics of everyone."

"I wasn't shown much because there was a lot of b-llsh-t going on," he insisted.

Serena agreed that there were two Bachelorettes to follow as well as two groups of men, which robbed viewers from being able to connect with a particular man or two.

"You are definitely not the first lead to get flack, and I think it's for the best you probably found that out after you finished your season," Serena said.

"Oh my god, that would eat me alive!" Zach admitted.

Zach also said he received a lot of support from The Bachelor host Jesse Palmer and the show's Season 17 lead Sean Lowe.

Jesse shared earlier this year how Zach was "very emotionally mature" during his season, which ended up being quite the love story.

The Bachelor's 27th season currently airs on Monday nights at 8PM ET/PT on ABC, and Zach has nine bachelorettes heading into the next episode.

The women remaining are Aly Jacobs, Ariel Frenkel, Brooklyn Willie, Charity Lawson, Gabi Elnicki, Greer Blitzer, Jess Girod, Kaity Biggar, and Kat Izzo.

Zach said he followed his gut throughout his journey to find love and he's definitely "happy" right now.
