Colton Underwood is opening up about his virginity following Monday night's The Bachelorette episode, when he shared his long-kept secret with Becca Kufrin and the world.

After a fun-filled day of sailing on a catamaran and diving for conch shells in the Bahamas, Becca and the 26-year-old former professional football player talked over an intimate dinner during which Colton confessed he is inexperienced in relationships and has never had sex before.

"I know I'm not the first one to make a joke or make light of a heavy situation... it's my way to handle certain situations. I love to resort to comedy to cover up topics that I don't like to get serious about," Colton wrote on Instagram.

"On [the latest] episode I talk about something I typically avoid talking about at all costs, but it was appropriate for me to bring up."

Colton explained to Becca that he only had one serious relationship before going on The Bachelorette and didn't have a lot of dates or girlfriends because he had been so focused on his football career.

Colton used to be ashamed of his virginity, as he confessed to making up lies in the locker room to save face around other athletes and only told "a handful of people" the truth. But now, his secret is out and he's proud of himself.

"I considered it a gift and a curse for many years, but finally have come to terms about standing up for who I am and the details that make me, me," Colton continued in his Instagram post.

"Anyone who feels like they are hiding their truth out of embarrassment or fear of being judged... I HAVE BEEN THERE. You are not alone, I have covered up my truth with lies and tried to 'fit in' -- while I thought fitting in was what I wanted, I've recently learned that being different is what I need."

Colton explained to Becca in Monday night's episode he wants to have sex when the right woman comes along and steals his heart, that he's not necessarily waiting for marriage.

"We all have something that we hold close to us and something that makes us unique in our own ways. I ask for respect from everyone I meet moving forward and I'm here to call on everyone that needs that extra motivation to be 'different' -- HERE IT IS. Be who you are. I love you all," Colton concluded.

Colton has received a lot of support from The Bachelorette fans and his followers on social media.

One user commented on his heartfelt post, "I've never understood why anyone would be upset upon finding out a potential partner is a virgin. Not only do you know they're 'clean,' but what a thrill! To be the first (and possibly only) person they'll ever share that level of intimacy with?? Sign me up!"

And another person wrote to Colton, "It's actually really impressive being as attractive as you are that you've kept true to yourself and your values. I really don't know why Becca reacted the way she did to your secret. Any girl would be lucky to have a guy with such willpower and morals!"

Becca had a strong reaction to Colton's revelation he's a virgin. At dinner in the Bahamas, she excused herself from the table and took time to reflect and think about the situation before offering the bachelor a rose, which signified she'd like to visit his hometown and meet his family.

Last season's The Bachelorette star, Rachel Lindsay, even admitted in her Us Weekly blog that Becca's response was dramatic and uncalled for.
