Serena, who famously broke up Matt James on The Bachelor's 25th season after her hometown date, said on Bachelor in Paradise it's rare for her to want to be around someone all the time.

But Serena came to find out that she loved being around the former grocery-store owner from Chicago, IL, all the time.

Serena and Joe's relationship was a little awkward and "uncomfortable" once Joe's ex-girlfriend of nearly two years, Kendall Long, arrived in Mexico to seek closure with Joe and start a new romance.

But Serena and Joe stayed strong through it all, and Serena said she was willing to risk getting her heartbroken if it meant possibly ending up with Joe.

Kendall, clearly trying to move on from her January 2020 breakup from Joe, attempted to focus her attention on The Bachelorette 16 suitor Ivan Hall, but she couldn't help lasering in on her past and watching Joe's new romance blossom on the beach.

Kendall seemed wrapped up in what she had lost, especially since Joe and Kendall only appeared to split because they couldn't agree on a city in which to live long-term. Kendall could never see herself moving away from her family in Los Angeles, but Joe wanted to return to Chicago, where his own family and friends reside.

Kendall -- who initially appeared on Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s season of The Bachelor -- felt extremely vulnerable and bothered in Paradise.

And one night, Joe surprised Serena with a blanket on the beach covered in lit candles and rose petals. Joe felt like their relationship was "real and comfortable," and he considered Serena to be his girlfriend by that point.

After some playful and flirtatious banter on the blanket, Serena shared with Joe, "I'm falling in love with you."

"I think I'm falling in love with you," Joe replied.

"Really?! No way?! Oh my God!" Serena yelled.

Serena was "giddy" about her romance with Joe, but Kendall was starting to fall apart.

As Joe and Serena kissed in each other's arms and danced on the beach while embracing, Kendall felt upset and "stressed out."

It hurt Kendall too much, apparently, to watch Joe fall in love with someone else on the same beach where they had fallen in love before on Bachelor in Paradise's fifth season.

"I just feel really detached from everyone... I just don't know how much longer I can do this, for Joe to be thriving and him seeing that I'm not. I'm just painfully vulnerable and I never used to be," Kendall lamented.

When Kendall sat down with Joe to discuss her lingering feelings, he confessed that he truly thought it was "over" between them.

Joe said his relationship with Kendall was "real" and it "worked," but he told the cameras, "If she really wanted me back, she should have told me before I got here and before I started this. Because I really, really loved her."

Joe said he was seriously invested in Serena and what they were building, and so he chose to let Kendall go.

"This is just, like, devastating. It really is. Joe is my person, like, I need a second," Kendall said in her final words, bawling her eyes out.

"I was in a real relationship with Joe and I came back where it all started, and what that did to me, I just feel absolutely broken. This is the hardest thing I've ever been through and it just keeps going. I've never experienced anything like this."

Once Kendall left, Joe and Serena no longer had anything or anyone holding them back.

Joe announced to the whole group before a Rose Ceremony, "My first time on Paradise meant a lot to me, and I'm realizing this time might mean a little more."

Serena and Joe proceeded to enjoy "Paradise Prom" together and danced the night away, and the cast voted them as "King and Queen" of the event. It seemed everyone viewed them as being the strongest couple on the show.

So what happens between Joe and Serena on the upcoming Bachelor in Paradise finale?

Do Serena and Joe break up or stay together -- and did they get engaged?

Joe and Serena stay together on Bachelor in Paradise

Joe and Serena decided to take their relationship to the next level in Mexico by entering a Fantasy Suite and enjoying an overnight date together.

The couple then made it to the Final Rose Ceremony -- along with two other couples -- and Carbone reported earlier this summer that Joe popped the question and the couple got engaged!

Joe and Serena will therefore be shown making a commitment to each other on Bachelor in Paradise's seventh-season finale next week.

Abigail Heringer seemed to give away that Serena and Joe are still together

Carbone said eyewitnesses had spotted Joe and Serena together in Chicago at a rooftop pool in early July.

"These people are gonna find a way to see each other and not hide it. They do it every season," Carbone wrote in a July 6 blog post.

Abigail later seemingly low-key spoiled Serena and Joe's relationship status in August, Cosmopolitan reported.

Serena posted a photo of herself poolside in a black-and-white bikini on Instagram and captioned it, "Feeling beachy tonight, I wonder why."

Abigail commented, "I'm stealing you away from @joeamabile1."

Viewers immediately noticed the potential spoiler, so it seems Joe and Serena are still engaged.
