In a side story to the death of Anna Nicole Smith, a Bahamian immigration official said he won't resign over photographs of him and Smith in bed.

The Tribune of Nassau and other news outlets published two photos of Smith and Shane Gibson, the Bahamas' chief immigration official, embracing in bed fully clothed, E! News said. Gibson was criticized for reportedly granting Smith special treatment when she applied for residency last year and for allegedly speeding up the processing of her paperwork.

Leaders of the opposition Bahamian Democratic Movement called for Gibson's resignation, CNN said Tuesday. But in a televised statement, Gibson refused to resign, saying Smith was a friend of his wife and family, and that the "innocent photographs" were taken by Smith's companion, Howard K. Stern.

Saying he did nothing improper, Gibson added, "Sometimes it's normal to accelerate residency cases, but the relationship did not influence it."

Smith died Feb. 8 in a Hollywood, Fla., hospital where she was taken after being found unresponsive in a casino hotel room. A cause of death has not been determined.
