"American Idol" auditions scheduled for Memphis were canceled Thursday to avoid interfering with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Memphis is taking in tens of thousands of refugees from the hurricane, and the producers of "American Idol" said in a release they decided Monday's auditions would only place added pressure on the city.

"... Out of respect for the city's citizens, their public services, and the need to focus public safety efforts on the victims, this decision was made," the release said.

Another audition city will be announced shortly. Auditions are scheduled over the next couple of weeks in Denver and Chicago for the 2006 season of Fox TV's talent show.
