'The Simple Life' star Nicole Richie pleads not guilty to DUI

Nicole Richie pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office said.

Richie entered the plea through her attorney, E! News reported.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for April 2.

The 25-year-old "The Simple Life" star could be sentenced to up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted. She has a previous DUI conviction.

Richie's encounter with law enforcement arose Dec. 11 when highway police, responding to 911 calls of a wrong-way freeway driver, allegedly found her in the carpool lane from behind the wheel of her idling SUV.
