The Bachelorette star Kaitlyn Bristowe was reportedly completely torn in the days leading up to the finale and her indecisiveness led to a devastated runner-up.

Bristowe confessed she was "emotionally drained, confused and lost" prior to the conclusion of her season. She just couldn't decide between Nick Viall and Shawn Booth, Us Weekly reported in its August 3 issue.

"I was like, 'You're a mess!'" host Chris Harrison told Us.

While Bristowe is currently "blissfully engaged," letting go of her runner-up to get to this point was extremely difficult.

Walking into the final Rose Ceremony at The Bachelor mansion in Agoura Hills, CA, the runner-up was reportedly very confident Bristowe would be accepting the Neil Lane engagement ring he had selected for her.

Bristowe let the runner-up get "painfully close" to popping the question, as he actually got down on one knee and professed his love.

"He started his speech and got emotional a few seconds in," a show insider told the magazine. "Kaitlyn grabbed his hand and let him keep going, and he thought that was the sign he needed to propose."

But Bristowe's hand gesture was actually one intended to cut him off, to stop him from talking.

"She told him they have something special and she loves him," added The Bachelorette insider. "But she said her heart was with someone else."

The moment was therefore "heart-wrenching and dramatic."

Bristowe's runner-up began to take the news well until the Bachelorette allegedly begged him to talk things through with her.

"He was like, 'What the f-ck?'" said the source. "He told her, 'I need to go, and you need to go be with the other person.' There was nothing left to say."

The second-place man was clearly shocked and blindsided Bristowe had opted to dump him. After all, she basically expressed love to both Viall and Booth at the end of her journey.

"Everything was perfect," the insider told Us, "and then it wasn't."

But Bristowe technically didn't lead anyone on. She was reportedly "deadlocked" when trying to choose which guy was the better person for her. Harrison told Us that Viall and Bristowe just had "this thing" -- an "undeniable connection" -- while she and Booth enjoyed this "amazing romance."

Since the finale filmed 10 weeks ago, the rejected suitor has reportedly "moved on."

"There has been zero communication," the insider said.

But regardless, Bristowe is "so happy" and apparently cannot wait to share her engagement news with the world.

The Bachelorette finale airs Monday night, July 27 at 8PM ET/PT on ABC.
