Reality TV shows power VH1 to its best ratings year ever

VH1 enjoyed its best year ever in 2006, and the basic cable network has some of its reality programming to thank.

The record-breaking year was due to the successful premieres of several new reality series, such as Flavor of Love, Super Group and Rock Docs, as well as the prosperity of a few returning reality favorites, including Hogan Knows Best, Celebrity Fit Club, My Fair Brady and Breaking Bonaduce.

VH1 averaged 681,000 total primetime viewers during 2006, a performance that ranked the year as the network's most watched year ever and represented a 14% increase over its 2005 average of 598,000 total viewers. Throughout the entire day, VH1 averaged 381,000 total viewers, a 7% increase over 2005's average. 

The network also averaged 432,000 primetime viewers in the key Adults 18-49 demographic -- a figure that represented an 11% increase over 2005's average.  In total day, VH1 averaged 233,000 Adults 18-49 viewers throughout the day, a 5% increase from 2005.

The Flavor of Love 2 finale, which aired on Sunday, October 15 and saw Public Enemy rapper Flava Flav award his clock to Deelishis, was viewed by a all-time VH1 record-breaking audience of more than 7.5 million people.  The finale was also the top rated non-sports show on cable television this year.

The Sunday, August 6 premiere of the fourth installment of Celebrity Fit Club, featuring Tina Yothers, Carie Wilson and Vincent Pastore, was also heavily watched, attracting 1.8 million viewers and ranking among the top 15 programs on cable for that date.  The Sunday, July 23 season finale of My Fair Brady:  We're Getting Married! was also the highest rated episode of the series ever, scoring a 1.5 rating in the Adult 18-49 demographic with more than 2 million total viewers watching Chris Knight and Adrianne Curry exchange their vows.  The finale was also the top-rated regularly scheduled program on all of basic cable for that date.

Due to the success of its "Celebreality" reality programming lineup, VH1 now ranks in the top five basic cable networks in primetime on Sundays.  The network currently sits in fourth place, averaging a .8 rating in the Adult 18-49 demographic.
