A statement on the Marie Claire creative director and "Project Runway" judge's website announced she will report to Hearst Magazines Chief Content Officer Joanna Coles as head of the "number one fashion magazine brand in the world" beginning Sept. 18.

"Nina embodies all the qualities of a modern editor-in-chief," Hearst Magazines President David Carey said.

"She's an important authority in fashion, respected by her peers for her personal style, her ability to spot talent and her deep relationships across the industry. She's also known to millions around the world for her role on Project Runway and the dynamic, behind-the-scenes life she shares with 4.5 million engaged followers on social media. Her love of fashion is deeply felt and it will resonate on every page."

Garcia told the New York Times she plans to work closely with the 46 international editions to continue Elle's tradition of celebrating diversity.

"I understand firsthand what the DNA is," she said. "I am looking to amplify the DNA of the brand. It's bold, it's provocative, it's inclusive, democratic, it's innovative. I just want to amplify all those things we know about Elle."

Garcia will be the successor to Robbie Myers, who served as editor-in-chief of the magazine since 2000.

"Robbie has been an inspiring leader for 17 years, and her contributions are too numerous to count," Carey said. "She conceived trademark editorial franchises, from 'Women in Hollywood' to 'Women in Tech,' and transformed them into events that gather the most creative, influential women of the moment. She made Elle an essential part of the global conversation, and we wish her the very best in her next endeavor."

Garcia's first issue will likely publish in February or March of 2018.

"Elle is close to my heart, and this is a very special homecoming," she said. "This is Elle's moment to be out in front, inspiring and informing readers in every area. Fashion and beauty are at Elle's core, as are culture, politics and health, and new media. I'm excited to work with this incredibly talented team to set the pace for women who are moving as fast as the times we live in."
