Over the course of eight episodes, the diverse families will travel through large and small cities while competing against each other in challenges that are set against iconic American backdrops including the Grand Canyon and Washington Monument, as well as more obscure tourist destinations such as the World's Largest Chair and a sneaker the size of a car.

One family will be eliminated each week based on their performance in the challenges, and the family left standing at the end will "return home with a dream prize that perfectly compliments their extraordinary and memorable summer vacation," according to NBC.

The families competing in Great American Road Trip will be revealed at a later date.  The series is being produced by BBC Worldwide.

In addition to Great American Road Trip's debut, NBC also announced that it will premiere its I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! revival on June 1 and America's Got Talent's fourth season on June 23.
