MTV has announced that Celebrity Rap Superstar, a new reality competition series that will see celebrities mentored by well-versed lyricists in an attempt to hone their hip-hop skills, will premiere Thursday, August 30 at 10PM ET/PT.
The competition -- which prior to today's announcement, had previously been titled Rapping with the Stars -- will begin with eight hip-hop wannabes being mentored by established rappers who share their tricks of the trade. Over the course of eight weeks, the contestants will perform cover songs, original raps or freestyle routines in-front of a live studio audience and a panel of judges consisting of hip-hop experts.
Following each week's performances, home viewers will be able to cast votes for their favorite celebrity contestant, with the participant who receives the least amount of votes being kicked to the curb quicker than former The Surreal Life cast member Vanilla Ice. In the end, the celebrity participant who home viewers feel has refined their rapping repertoire to the best of their ability will be crowned "Celebrity Rap Superstar." The celebrity participants will be mentored by Tone Loc, Paul Wall, Warren G and other members of rap royalty. Gossip guru Perez Hilton (whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr.) was the only celebrity contestant MTV has formally announced as participating in Celebrity Rap Superstar, however earlier this month, Broadcasting & Cable reported that former Baywatch and The Real Gilligan's Island beauty Nicole Eggert and teen pop star and former House of Carters star Nick Carter may also be part of the show's cast.
