John was referring to his last public appearance with Claire earlier this month.
While John didn't reveal specifics about his breakup with Claire, he noted how "private challenges" led to the demise of their relationship.
"This was a mutual decision based on private challenges, and had nothing to do with any reposts," John continued in his statement.
"While I'll always appreciate and respect the time we shared together, I feel it's best to move forward separately."
He concluded, "While our relationship was public, I wish for this chapter to remain as private as possible. Thank you for your kindness and support."
For Claire's part, she shared John's announcement via Instagram Stories and added, "I ain't reading all that but ditto."
Claire previously hinted her romance with John was on the rocks by uploading a cryptic TikTok video.
In the video, Claire was lip-synching the lyrics to "Don't Smile" by Sabrina Carpenter.
"Don't smile because it happened, baby, cry because it's over / I want you to miss me, I want you to miss me," Claire mouthed in her post, which also featured a Farmer Wants a Wife hashtag.
On Farmer Wants a Wife's third-season finale, John selected Claire as his winner over runner-up Lily Ayres.
John seemed to appreciate Claire's sense of humor, but he was worried about their "differences" and "outlook on life," according to People.

However, when John decided that Claire was "The One," he said he felt totally confident in his final decision.
When breaking up with Lily on the show, he told her, "I think you're loving, you're confident, you're sure of yourself. You're a leader... I think you're going to make somebody very, very happy. I think you're going to make a wonderful mother and a spouse. I just don't think that's going to be with me."
He added, "Regardless, though, I think you're a beautiful, wonderful person, and I don't want to get in your way of finding your true love out there. I think this is goodbye."
John told Claire when revealing she had won his heart that he admired her stoic attitude towards life.
"You have just a calming presence. It really makes me feel happy, calm, and I really enjoy just having you around," John explained.
"I think we can both agree that farm work isn't your forte, but that's okay, because that doesn't even matter. You've surprised me every single day, and you continue to surprise me now. So what do you say, Claire? You want to give this a shot?"
Claire agreed to date John after the show, and the rest of the farmers also believed they had found lasting love.
However, two other couples -- Colton Hendricks and Zoe Green as well as Jay Woods and Grace Clark -- have also split.
