'Dancing' couple Derek Hough and Shannon Elizabeth announce break-up

Derek Hough and Shannon Elizabeth's romantic relationship has seen its final dance.

The Dancing with the Stars sixth-season lovebirds announced that they have split as a couple via their respective Twitter accounts.

"Hi everyone, we wanted you all to know directly from us, that [we] have decided to end our relationship as boyfriend & girlfriend," wrote both Hough and Elizabeth in a Friday statement that appeared on both of their Twitter pages.

"However, we love & care about each other very much & will remain friends & in each other's lives."

After receiving several messages of support, Elizabeth responded with thanks.

"Thank you everyone for all your sweet words & encouragement-it really means a lot to me!" she posted Saturday on her Twitter page.

Elizabeth and Hough began dating during their Spring 2008 Dancing with the Stars sixth-season partnership, which included the two being photographed kissing and canoodling on a Malibu beach but playing coy about the nature of their relationship -- even after they were the seventh couple eliminated.

They subsequently confirmed their relationship in July before Elizabeth quickly squelched rumors that the two were engaged.
