Bret Michaels' surgery to close a hole in his heart on Monday was a success, according to doctors.

"Bret Michaels underwent a successful heart procedure today at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix," hospital representatives said in a statement obtained by People. "Michaels is currently recuperating at St. Joseph's where he remains for observation in ICU."

The musician and reality TV star underwent the procedure to repair a hole in his heart which was discovered after he suffered a "warning stroke" last May. The "warning stroke" came less than a month after he suffered a massive brain hemorrhage while recovering from an earlier emergency appendectomy.

Michaels' procedure involved a cardiac catheterization, in which doctors inserted a catheter into a vein in the groin and direct wires and a closure device into the heart. Cameras were used to assist the doctors as they operated to patch the hole, according to The Associated Press.

In order to maintain normal blood flow, the closure device will stay in Michaels' heart permanently.

The former Rock of Love and current Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It star would reportedly have been at risk of developing new clots and suffering additional strokes if his blood flow hadn't been corrected.

Although he suffered the warning stroke less than a week before The Celebrity Apprentice's third-season finale, Michaels still attended the live event, which ended with Donald Trump declaring him the competition's champion.
