Former couple Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff argued before and after their dance performance at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday, a witness said.

The "Dancing with the Stars" professional dancers, who also recently appeared together in the stage show "Burn the Floor," announced this month they had ended their engagement.

"They were going at it, screaming at each other," an eyewitness told E! News. "He said she was taking too long in hair and makeup. It got kind of loud."

However, Smirnoff said she was pleased with their performance on the awards show.

"It was nerve-racking, especially when we heard the announcer say, 'From "Dancing with the Stars...," ' " Karina told E!

"My heart jumped out a couple of times, but then I was like, 'Enjoy this because how often do you get to perform at the Emmys?' And then it just felt like it went very fast. I wanted to do it a couple of more times to really get into it."
