The Hills stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are apparently suffering from trust issues.

Montag has hired a private investigator because she feels Pratt has been seeing another woman since they separated late last month while he thinks she has a romantic relationship with friend Cougar Zank, RadarOnline reported Monday.

Montag and friend Jen Bunney have been staying at a Malibu home rented by Zank since she moved out of the Pacific Palisades, CA home she shared with Pratt late last month.

Pratt is convinced that Zank has sided with Montag because "he wanted her for himself," a source told RadarOnline.

"[Montag and Zank] are definitely friends, and I don't know if there is anything more to it than that, but Spencer believes there is," the source told RadarOnline.

"He's certain there is."

Montag filed for legal separation from Pratt early last week at the Santa Monica Courthouse, citing irreconcilable differences, and her future earnings should now be considered separate property.

"Heidi is very concerned about the finances," the source told RadarOnline. "Everybody knows she's made more money than Spencer. She needs to protect it."

Montag is apparently so concerned about how Pratt spends their money that she has enlisted the help of a private investigator.

"She is very anxious to find out if her suspicions and the rumors are true, especially if he's spent any money on another woman. Heidi has hired a former member of the sheriff department, who now works as a private investigator, to look into it," the source told RadarOnline.

"It is really important to Heidi to find out if Spencer has been cheating on her."

Montag and Zank recently traveled to New York City to find a production company for her new reality project with Bunney, according to RadarOnline, which added she met with executives from ITV -- the same production company that produced last summer's NBC revival of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! which included The Hills couple as participants.

Multiple sources have recently claimed that Montag and Pratt's split is a publicity stunt because The Hills is currently in the midst of airing its final season and the couple has no new projects on the horizon.

The Hills co-stars Audrina Patridge and Lauren "Lo" Bosworth and The City star Whitney Port also recently stated they doubt Montag and Pratt's split is for real.

However Montag is allegedly planning to follow her separation filing with a divorce filing.

"She's just getting organized on a few things, and then it will be filed," the source told RadarOnline. "She felt she had to get the separation petition done in a rush last week to stop the money flow."
