Lifetime picks up 'America's Most Wanted' series after Fox passes

UPI News Service, 09/06/2011

John Walsh says Lifetime will air new episodes of his crime-fighting show "America's Most Wanted," which Fox canceled this year after 24 seasons.

"I've always believed there was something very special about 'America's Most Wanted' and that there should be a home for it on television, and I couldn't be happier to now be able bring it back on Lifetime," said Walsh in a statement issued to EW.com Tuesday.

"We've often been called the court of last resort -- [and] now we are back in the game and ready to saddle up for another season to get justice for victims and put dangerous criminals behind bars."

The series seeks help from the public in catching people on the run from law-enforcement agencies. It celebrated the capture of its 1,000th criminal in 2008.

Although it consistently won its time period and averaged 5 million viewers last season, Fox said it is no longer profitable as a weekly series. However, the network said it plans to air quarterly "America's Most Wanted" specials, the first of which will premiere next month.

Walsh became a victims' rights advocate after the abduction and murder of his son, Adam, in 1981.
