Demi Lovato got a much more interesting 21st birthday present than just her first legal drink.

The X Factor judge is currently working with the Free The Children organization in Kenya, and as an appreciation gift for her volunteer efforts, locals gave her a goat for her birthday, the U.K.'s Daily Star newspaper reported.

"Btw (by the way)... So big deal or anything but... One of Maasai communities gave me a GOAT for my birthday!!!!!! I named him billy," Lovato, whose birthday is on August 20, tweeted.

While a goat may be considered a strange gift in America, it's a traditional present in Africa.

Free The Children is an organization which deals with international child development, and Lovato has reportedly been helping to build a new school in Kenya in addition to lending her services to different communities.

"With 21 being a milestone birthday, I wanted a memorable and meaningful way to celebrate, rather than throw a big birthday bash," Lovato told Daily Star, explaining her choice of birthday excursion.

"I knew... volunteering with Free The Children would give me the opportunity to have a life-changing experience I would never forget, with the people closest to me. Also having worked with the organization over this past year, it's been great to see first-hand the wonderful work that is being done as a result of all the incredible efforts of young people around the nation."

Fox announced in late March that Lovato will be returning to The X Factor's judging panel for its upcoming third season. This will mark her second season serving on the panel alongside fellow returning judge Simon Cowell and newbie judges Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio.
