In the "Battle of the Teens" on the season finale of Fox's American Idol 3, 19-year-old Fantasia Barrino, the last remaining member of the show's "Three Divas," defeated 16-year-old Diana DeGarmo to become the third "American Idol" selected by the show.'American Idol' to assign additional voting phone numbers for finale... but will it matter?

Attempting to quell the ongoing controversy over the program's voting system, the producers of FOX's American Idol have announced that Fantasia Barrino and Diana DeGarmo, the two finalists left competing for this season's Idol title, will have additional voting phone numbers allocated to them for the show's finale voting. In Tuesday's penultimate performance episode of American Idol, each of the three remaining contestants performed three songs -- one of her own choosing, one chosen by the Idol judges, and one selected by this week's guest judge, veteran music producer Clive Davis. After the shocking ousters of favored contestants LaToya London and Jennifer Hudson, leaving three less-talented teenagers in pursuit of victory in Fox's American Idol 3, a review of Idol's voting system was probably to be expected. What wasn't expected was the degree of chaos and error present in the system as currently constituted -- and the fact that the Idol producers have been aware of the problems for a long time but seem instead to have embraced the windfall that the chaos creates for one of Idol's sponsors.
