Although its new season is off to a solid ratings start, viewers may be tiring of Dancing with the Stars.
Monday night's two-hour premiere of the ABC reality dance competition series' ninth season averaged 17.5 million viewers and a 4.1/10 rating/share in the Adults 18-49 demographic while Tuesday night's two-hour broadcast averaged 15.2 million viewers and a 3.5/9 rating/share among Adults 18-49, according to Nielsen Media Research's Primetime Preliminary Fast National Data ratings figures.
While Dancing with the Stars' Monday night broadcast won its time period among total viewers, it finished second among Adults 18-49 behind Fox's broadcast of the two-hour season premiere of House, which averaged a 6.5/16 rating/share among Adults 18-49. House finished second among total viewers, averaging 14.8 million viewers.
Monday night's ratings numbers were also well below those of last fall's Monday night premiere of Dancing with the Stars' seventh season, which averaged 21.1 million total viewers and a 5.3/13 rating/share among Adults 18-49 during the first night of a similar three-night season debut.
Dancing with the Stars' Tuesday night broadcast finished second among both total viewers and Adults 18-49.
CBS' broadcast of NCIS' seventh season premiere won the 8-9PM ET/PT hour by averaging 20.0 million viewers and a 4.6/13 rating/share among Adults 18-49 -- both of which were all-time series highs. The series premiere of the show's new NCIS: Los Angeles spinoff then won the 9-10PM ET/PT hour by averaging 18.3 million viewers and a 4.3/11 rating/share among Adults 18-49.
Tuesday night's ratings numbers were also well below those of Dancing with the Stars' seventh season Tuesday night premiere, which averaged 18.2 million total viewers and a 4.7/12 rating/share in Adults 18-49.

Tuesday night's premiere of American Idol's eighth season was the highest-rated telecast of the 2008-2009 television season, however the show's season premiere ratings still dipped for the second consecutive year.
American Idol's two-hour premiere averaged 30.1 million total viewers and scored an 11.6/28 rating/share in the Adults 18-49 demographic and a 9.7/26 rating/share among Adults 18-34, according to Nielsen Media Research preliminary fast national ratings figures -- a performance that easily makes it the highest-rated entertainment telecast of the 2008-2009 television season.
However similar to most other broadcast network shows that have returned this season, those numbers were down from last January's broadcast of Idol's seventh-season premiere, which averaged 33.2 million total viewers and scored a 13.8/32 rating/share in the Adults 18-49 demographic and a 12.9/33 rating/share among Adults 18-34.
Tuesday night's debut marked the second consecutive year that Idol's premiere dipped a bit from its previous season, as the show's monster sixth-season premiere in January 2007 averaged 37.3 million total viewers, a 15.7/36 rating/share among Adults 18-49 and a 14.8/38 rating/share among Adults 18-34.
Idol's eighth-season premiere also fell short of the ratings numbers that the show's fourth (33.5 million viewers and a 14.0/33 in Adults 18-49) and fifth season (35.5 million viewers and a 15.3/34 in Adults 18-49) premieres had delivered, making it the least-watched premiere since the show's third-season debut in January 2004.
Despite the prior season decline, Tuesday night's two-hour Idol 8 premiere still managed to hammer the combined total programming of the four other major network broadcasters in the 8-10PM ET/PT time period -- out-delivering CBS, ABC, NBC and The CW's combined ratings by 17% among Adults 18-49 (an 11.6/28 rating/share vs. a combined 9.9/24 rating/share); 23% among Adults 18-34 (a 9.7/26 rating/share vs. a combined 7.9/21 rating/share); and 145% among Teens (a 10.8/33 rating/share vs. a combined 4.4/14 rating/share).
In addition, it also outperformed CBS, ABC, NBC and The CW by 85% among total viewers (30.1 million vs. a combined 16.3 million).
As the highest-rated entertainment telecast of the 2008-2009 season on any network, Idol's eighth-season premiere broadcast also blew away the season's previously top-rated programs among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34, Teens and total viewers.
Idol beat Grey's Anatomy's September fifth-season premiere (the season's previously top-ranked telecast among the Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34 demographics) by 57% among Adults 18-49 (11.6/28 rating/share vs. 7.4/18 rating/share) and by 24% among Adults 18-34 (9.7/26 rating/share vs. 7.8/21 rating/share).
Idol's debut also beat CSI's October ninth-season premiere (the season's previously top-ranked telecast among total viewers) by 28% among total viewers (30.1 million vs. 23.5 million); and it crushed Family Guy's November 2 episode (the season's previously top-ranked telecast among Teens) by 108% among Teens (10.8/33 rating/share vs. 5.2/15 rating/share).
In addition, Idol's premiere also helped Fox deliver the highest-rated night of the 2008-2009 season -- including both entertainment and sports programming -- among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34, Teens and total viewers.

Dancing with the Stars waltzed all over the competition with its sixth-season premiere broadcast on ABC, winning its time period in all key measurements and ranking as Monday night's most-watched program.
Dancing with the Stars' 90-minute sixth-season premiere broadcast in the 8PM ET/PT time period averaged 20.9 million total viewers and a 5.5/15 rating/share in the Adults 18-49 demographic, according to Nielsen Media Research's Fast Affiliate Live Plus Same Day ratings.
Despite facing stiff competition from original programming on NBC (My Dad's Better than Your Dad and Deal or No Deal), Fox (Canterbury's Law and New Amsterdam) and CBS (the post-writers strike return of new episodes of The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men) -- ABC's Dancing with the Stars sixth-season debut qualified as Monday night's No. 1 program in average total viewers and among Adults 18-34, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54.
Dancing with the Stars sixth-season premiere outdrew its nearest competition -- CBS -- by an average of 9.9 million total viewers (20.9 million vs. 11.0 million) and by 22% in the Adults 18-49 demographic (5.5/15 rating/share vs. 4.5/12 rating/share). Dancing with the Stars also won each of its three half-hour time slots.
In addition, Dancing with the Stars generated ABC's largest audience among Adults 18-49 in the Mondays at 8PM ET/PT time period since last November when the network aired a fifth-season performance episode broadcast featuring the Top 4 couples. Dancing with the Stars sixth-season debut also generated ABC's highest rating in the time slot among Adults 18-34 since last March, which was a fourth-season performance episode broadcast.
Dancing with the Stars sixth-season premiere was on par with the show's fifth-season debut last fall, which averaged 21.2 million total viewers and a 5.8/15 Adults 18-49 rating/share -- numbers that also ranked it first in its time period.
With Dancing with the Stars serving as its lead in, The Bachelor: London Calling's 90-minute premiere at 9:30PM ET/PT averaged 9.0 million total viewers and a 3.3/9 rating/share in the Adults 18-49 demographic.
The two shows combined powered ABC to the No. 1 network ranking on Monday night in both average total viewers (14.9 million vs. CBS' 10.6 million) and the Adults 18-49 demographic (4.4/12 rating/share vs. CBS' 3.9/10 rating/share).

Oprah's Big Give gave a big ratings gift to ABC last night.
The Oprah Winfrey-produced reality competition series' premiere averaged 15.6 million total viewers and a 5.3/12 rating/share in the Adults 18-49 demographics during its Sunday at 9PM ET/PT time period, according to Live Plus Same Day ratings data from Nielsen Media Research.
Oprah's Big Give's premiere numbers make it the third-most-watched series debut of the 2007-2008 television season, behind only Fox's January 23 premiere of The Moment of Truth -- which had the benefit of American Idol as its lead-in -- and Fox's January 7 premiere of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which benefited from having the highly-rated NFC Conference Championship game as its lead-in.
Oprah's Big Give's premiere broadcast also won its regular Sunday night time slot, defeating its closest competition by almost 7% in total viewers (15.6 million vs. 8.7 million for Deal or No Deal on NBC) and by 36% among Adults 18-49 (5.3/12 rating/share vs. a 3.9/9 rating share for Family Guy and Unhitched on Fox).
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition averaged 14.8 million total viewers as Oprah's Big Give's 8PM ET/PT lead-in. In addition, ABC's premiere of Here Come the Newlyweds averaged 10.3 million total viewers and a 4.1/11 rating/share among Adults 18-49 in in the 10PM ET/PT time period.
Similar to Oprah's Big Give, Here Come the Newlyweds' premiere broadcast won its regular Sunday night time period. It bested its closest competition by almost 2.2 million total viewers (10.3 million vs. 8.1 million for NBC's repeat broadcast of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and by 95% among Adults 18-49 (4.1/11 vs. 2.1/6 for Law & Order: SVU).

Despite hefty competition from Fox's American Idol and NBC's The Biggest Loser, CBS' Tuesday night Big Brother: 'Til Death Do You Part premiere broadcast still managed to post decent ratings numbers.
Big Brother's ninth-season debut in the Tuesdays at 9PM ET/PT time slot averaged 6.67 million total viewers and a 2.5/6 rating/share in the Adults 18-49 demographic, according to Live Plus Same Day ratings data from Nielsen Media Research.
The premiere of the long-running CBS reality series' first ever winter edition finished third in its time period behind American Idol and The Biggest Loser: Couples among both total viewers and the Adults 18-49 demographic.
Idol averaged 29.962 million total viewers and a 12.3/29 rating/share among Adults 18-49 over its two-hour broadcast on Fox, while The Biggest Loser averaged 7.399 million total viewers and a 2.9/7 rating/share among Adults 18-49 over its two-hour broadcast in NBC.
In addition, Big Brother 9 also finished third among Adults 18-34 with a 2.0/5 rating/share.

American Idol continued to be a ratings machine with Tuesday night's seventh-season premiere broadcast -- but it did dip a bit from last season's record-setting debut numbers.
Idol 7's two-hour debut broadcast averaged 33.2 million total viewers and scored a 13.8/32 rating/share in the Adults 18-49 demographic and a 12.9/33 rating/share among Adults 18-34, according to Nielsen Media Research preliminary fast national ratings -- a performance that easily makes it the highest-rated entertainment telecast of the 2007-2008 television season.
However those numbers are down about 10% from American Idol's monster sixth-season premiere, which averaged 37.3 million total viewers and a 15.7/36 rating/share among Adults 18-49 and a 14.8/38 rating/share among Adults 18-34 demographic in January 2007. At the time, the premiere had ranked as the highest-rated entertainment telecast since NBC's May 2004 broadcast of Friends' series finale.
Last night's American Idol premiere marks the first time since the show's 2002 debut that an Idol premiere has failed to deliver bigger ratings than the previous edition's season premiere.
Idol's seventh-season premiere also fell slightly short of the ratings numbers that the show's fourth (33.5 million viewers and a 14.0/33 in Adults 18-49) and fifth season (35.5 million viewers and a 15.3/34 in Adults 18-49) premieres had delivered, making it the lowest-rated premiere since the show's January 2004 third-season debut.
Despite the prior season decline, Tuesday night's two-hour Idol 7 premiere still managed to hammer the combined total programming of the six other major network broadcasters in the 8PM to 10PM ET/PT time period, out-delivering CBS, ABC, NBC, The CW, Univision and Telemundo's combined ratings by 33% among Adults 18-49 (a 13.8/32 rating/share vs. a combined 10.4/23 rating/share); 52% among Adults 18-34 (12.9/33 rating/share vs. a combined 8.5/22 rating/share); and 118% among Teens (12.2/35 rating/share vs. a combined 5.6/17 rating/share).
In addition, it also outperformed CBS, ABC, NBC and The CW by 12% among total viewers (33.2 million vs. a combined 29.7 million).
As the highest-rated entertainment telecast of the 2007-2008 season on any network, Idol 7's premiere broadcast blew away the season's previously top-rated programs among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34, Teens and total viewers.
Idol beat Grey's Anatomy's September 2007 fourth-season premiere (the season's previously top-ranked telecast among the Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34 demographics) by 55% among Adults 18-49 (13.8/32 rating/share vs. 8.9/21 rating/share) and by 42% among Adults 18-34 (12.9/33 rating/share vs.9.1/23 rating/share).
Idol's debut also beat CSI's September 2007 eighth-season premiere (the season's previously top-ranked telecast among total viewers) by 31% among total viewers (33.2 million vs. 25.4 million). And it crushed Family Guy's November 2007 special 100th-episode broadcast (the season's previously top-ranked telecast among Teens) by 94% among Teens (12.2/35 rating/share vs. 6.3/18 rating/share).
In addition, Idol 7's premiere also helped Fox deliver the highest-rated night of the 2007-2008 season -- including both entertainment and sports programming -- among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34, Teens and total viewers.
Fox beat CBS' broadcast of last Saturday's NFL playoff game between New England and Jacksonville (the season's previously highest-rated night in the Adults 18-49 demographic and among total viewers) by 24% (13.8/32 rating/share vs. 11.1/31 rating/share) among Adults 18-49 and 11% among total viewers (33.2 million vs. 30.0 million).

The media dubbed Sunday's NFL match-up between the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts a mini-Super Bowl, and it didn't fail to deliver a miniature Super Bowl-like ratings boost for The Amazing Race's twelfth-season premiere.
Although a lengthy NFL overrun delayed its broadcast by nearly a half-hour, The Amazing Race 12's premiere attracted the show's largest ever debut-episode audience, averaging 13.72 million overall viewers and a 8.3/12 rating/share in households during its broadcast, according to Live Plus Same Day ratings data from Nielsen Media Research. CBS' broadcast of the Patriots/Colts game -- the highest-rated regular season Sunday afternoon NFL game in over 20 years -- averaged 33.82 million overall viewers during its entire broadcast and 38.46 million viewers during its 7:00-7:27PM ET overrun.
The Amazing Race 12's one-hour premiere -- which because of the football game, didn't begin until 8:26PM ET -- delivered its best ratings in the Adults 18-49 (4.3/10 rating/share) and Adults 25-54 (5.2/11 rating/share) demographics since the show's September 2005 eighth-season debut broadcast.
In addition, the show's twelfth-season premiere was The Amazing Race's most-watched broadcast since the show's May 2005 seventh-season finale averaged 16.01 million overall viewers -- the long-running franchise's all-time broadcast record.
Compared to The Amazing Race's tenth-season debut last September -- its most recent Fall premiere -- the show's twelfth-season debut increased by 35% among average overall viewers (13.72 million vs. 10.13 million); by 32% in households (8.3/12 vs. 6.3/10); by 13% among Adults 25-54 (5.2/11 vs. 4.6/10); and by 10% among Adults 18-49 (4.3/10 vs. 3.9/09).
For the week of October 29 through November 4, The Amazing Race 12 premiere broadcast ranked 17th in overall viewers; tied for 20th among Adults 18-49 with ABC's Tuesday night broadcast of Dancing with the Stars fifth-season results show; and also tied for 15th among Adults 25-54 with ABC's Sunday night broadcast of Brothers & Sisters.
60 Minutes -- the show sandwiched between CBS' Patriots/Colts broadcast and The Amazing Race -- also benefited significantly from having the football game as its lead-in. In addition to delivering its best households numbers since November 2006, 60 Minutes also delivered its best overall viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 performance since December 2005 -- resulting in the program ranking third among total viewers, tied for 10th among Adults 18-49, and seventh among Adults 25-54 in the week's overall rankings.

ABC's Dancing with the Stars returned with a ratings bang last night, with its fifth-season premiere broadcast ranking as Monday night's most-watched program.
Dancing with the Stars 5 averaged 21.2 million total viewers and a 5.8/15 Adults 18-49 rating/share during its 8-9:30PM ET/PT broadcast -- numbers that easily ranked it first in the overall 8-9:30PM time period, according to Live Plus Same Day ratings data from Nielsen Media Research. (However, although it beat NBC's 9-10PM ET/PT season premiere broadcast of Heroes by nearly eight million total viewers during their 9-9:30 overlap period, Heroes actually slightly edged Dancing among Adults 18-49 during the head-to-head period.)
Dancing with the Stars 5's debut outperformed the Fall 2006 third-season premiere of the reality dancing competition series -- which aired on a Tuesday night with a two-hour premiere -- in both average total viewers (21.2 million vs. 20.2 million) as well as among Adults 18-49 (5.8/15 rating/share vs. 5.7/15 rating/share).
However Dancing with the Stars 5's debut fell short of Dancing with the Stars' Spring 2007 fourth-season premiere among both total viewers (21.2 million vs. 21.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (5.8/15 vs. 6.3/16), leaving Dancing with the Stars 4's premiere numbers to remain as the reality franchise's best-ever season premiere results.
Dancing with the Stars 5's debut did manage to outdeliver nearly all of Dancing with the Stars 4's Monday night broadcasts and generated ABC's top viewer and young adult numbers in the time period since March 19, 2007 -- the night that Dancing with the Stars' fourth season premiered.
Combined with ratings for The Bachelor's eleventh-season premiere broadcast (9:30-11PM), Dancing with the Stars 5's debut numbers left ABC ranked as the No. 1 network on the opening Monday night of the Fall 2007 primetime programming season with an average of 15.4 million total viewers as well as a 4.7/12 rating/share among Adults 18-49.

Survivor: China's premiere broadcast was Thursday night's most-watched program with an average of 15.35 million total viewers and was also the No. 1 show on television in several key demographics.
The premiere broadcast of Survivor's fifteenth installment finished first in its Thursday 8-9PM time period in the Adults 18-49 demographic with a 5.0/15 rating/share and was also the time period's top show among households (9.0/15 rating/share); Adults 25-54 (6.1/17 rating/share); and Adults 18-34 (3.3/11 rating/share), according to Live Plus Same Day ratings data from Nielsen Media Research.
In addition, Survivor: China was Thursday night's No. 1 program among average total viewers, Adults 18-49, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-34.
Survivor: China's premiere as well as repeat broadcasts of CSI (9-10PM) and Without a Trace (10-11PM) made CBS No. 1 for the night in average total viewers (13.58 million); households (8.6/14 rating/share); Adults 18-49 (3.9/11 rating/share); and Adults 25-54 (5.1/13 rating/share).
Despite the good start, Survivor: China's 15.35 million viewer average also ranks the broadcast as Survivor's least watched premiere.
Last spring's debut of Survivor: Fiji was previously the long-running reality show's least watched premiere, averaging 16.68 million viewers. Fiji was also down compared to Survivor: Cook Islands' Fall 2006 debut, which averaged 18.00 million total viewers.

Last night's premiere of CBS' controversial new Kid Nation reality series averaged 9.4 million total viewers and placed first or second in its time period in all key demographics.
Kid Nation's 66-minute debut (the broadcast ran over by six minutes) finished first in its Wednesday 8-9PM time period in the Adults 18-49 demographic with a 3.1/9 rating/share and was also -- unsurprisingly -- the time period's top show among Children 2-11 (1.9/8 rating/share) and Children 6-11 (2.3/9 rating/share), according to Live Plus Same Day ratings data from Nielsen Media Research.
Kid Nation's 9.4 million viewers average placed it second its time period behind NBC's Deal or No Deal, which aired a special NFL-themed $1 million "Play At Home" episode that averaged about 9.7 million viewers. Kid Nation's 6.0/10 rating/share among households also placed a close second behind Deal or No Deal.
In addition, Kid Nation scored a 3.4/9 rating/share among Adults 25-54, placing it second to Fox's back-to-back premiere broadcasts of half-hour sitcoms Back to You and 'Til Death.
Kid Nation also finished second to The CW's America's Next Top Model ninth-season casting special among Adults 18-34 (2.5/8 vs. 2.9/10) and Teens 12-17 (2.3/9 vs. 3.4/13). Despite Top Model's performance, Kid Nation still delivered CBS' strongest Wednesday 8-9PM time period performance among Teens since the network's broadcast of the Grammy Awards in February 2006.
Kid Nation's Wednesday night premiere also bested CBS' Tuesday night live finale broadcast of Big Brother 8 in both total viewers (9.4 million vs. 8.7 million) and households (6.0/10 vs. 5.5/9).
