Candice Rickelle Glover (born November 22, 1989) is an American singer from St. Helena Island, South Carolina. She is the winner of the 12th season of American Idol. This makes her the first female winner of the show since Jordin Sparks won in 2007.

Early life

Glover was born in Beaufort, South Carolina to John and Carole Glover, and is the oldest of five siblings. She graduated from Beaufort High School in 2008. Before Idol, Candice was an insecure person. She didn't think she was all that beautiful as she struggled with her weight. In an interview, she said she had to have counseling at school because of her insecurity problems. When Idol ends, Candice says she wants to be a teacher to help girls through what she went through as a young teen. Nicki Minaj broke down in tears after Glover's performance of "Next To Me" by Emeli Sande saying that Candice is such a humble person and she loves that about her. On twitter, she vowed never to wear a dress on Idol, but broke her shell when she finally wore a dress for her performance of You've Changed by Billie Holiday. After this, an outbreak of girls began tweeting her saying she was a true inspiration to girls everywhere. Her musical influences are Christina Aguilera, Drake, Adele, Whitney Houston, and her all time favorite singer Jazmine Sullivan. In 2011, Jazmine Sullivan retweeted Candice's YouTube cover of Chasing Pavements by Adele and called it "Amazing". Glover performed this song again in the finale of American Idol. Sullivan inspired Candice to make each and every song her own. Which is known as one of her specialties as she said on Twitter, "Making songs my own is my favorite thing to do".

American Idol

Overview

Glover auditioned in Charlotte, North Carolina. She previously auditioned in seasons 9 and 11. However, in Season 9, former judge Simon Cowell made a comment saying that he could not see Glover being anything more than a lounge singer. She was cut during the final 70 round during season 9. She was eliminated by producers during season 9 when she forgot the lyrics to her song "Chasing Pavements" by Adele. In season 11, she made it to the Las Vegas rounds and was grouped with that season's finalists DeAndre Brackensick and eventual season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez, where she was eliminated at the top 40 Las Vegas week. Candice's mother, Carole Glover, didn't want Candice to audition again. She almost gave up but told her parents that she's going to give it one last shot. The first round of auditions was on June 19th. Candice went with 3 other friends, Wayne Wilson, Lana Scott, and Laquan Fields. For this round, Candice sang "Syrup & Honey" by Duffy and an uptempo version of "Mercy". Candice and Laquan advanced to the next round. However, Laquan was eliminated in Round 3, and Candice was the only one out of the four to audition for the judges. For Glover's Season 12 audition, she actually performed two songs. And one of them was her version of "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen but only one song was aired. Her audition was in October, but Candice kept it a secret from many people, she wanted it to be a surprise.

Season 11

Candice went back to American Idol once more, and auditioned in Savannah, Georgia. She sang Blame It On Me by Chrisette Michele. She advances, but her audition didn't air. In round 1, she performed Carena's "Slow Motion". She advances to Group Rounds. After her Group Round, she advances to Round 3, where she sang "Someone like You" by Adele. Season 12

During her audition in Season 12, she sang "Syrup & Honey" by Duffy where she received a standing ovation. Judge Randy Jackson noted that she was the best performer by far in the competition. Season 11 finalist Joshua Ledet was mentioned during Glover's audition for season 12. Mariah Carey called her singing "The best singing we have heard thus far". Candice advanced to Hollywood overwhelmed. In an interview, she said "I thought they were going to get sick of seeing my face". For the first round in Hollywood, Candice sang "Impossible" by Christina Aguilera. She advanced to Round 2 where she performed "Hit Em Up Style" with Kamaria Ousley, Denise Jackson, and Melinda Ademi. This was named the best group they seen all day. Round 3, she put a jazzy twist on Alicia Keys's "Girl On Fire". It was later announced that Glover was one of the top 20 girls of Season 12, she advanced to Las Vegas. In Vegas, she performed "Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin. In the semi-finals of the twelfth season, Glover performed "Ordinary People" by John Legend. She covered "Lovesong" by The Cure and broke down in tears after receiving a roaring standing ovation. For the very first time, after her Top 4 performance, she landed in the bottom two. On May 9, it was revealed that Candice Glover and Kree Harrison were the top 2 and will be competing for the title.
