The Year In Review: Reality TV still delivering strong ratings, despite missteps

At the "upfront" advertising-sales meetings prior to the 2004-05 primetime television season, the six U.S. broadcast networks and their cable competitors made it clear that the next season would feature lots and lots of reality television. In fact, the push for more reality TV became so severe that one network (Fox) resorted to the blatant theft of other networks' ideas. Now that the season is in its final two months, how did this glut of reality shows fare?

In the end, similar to the long-running reality franchise's ongoing ratings decline, ABC's third The Bachelorette edition ended not with a bang but with a whimper.

So much for The Bachelorette's much-ballyhooed perfect relationship record. Last year's The Bachelorette 2 couple is no more, with Meredith Phillips and Ian McKee having announced yesterday that they have ended their relationship.

CBS might not yet be ready to release any The Amazing Race 7 cast information, but apparently Race creator and executive producer Bertram van Munster has no such qualms.

Multimillionaire Andrew Firestone proposed to her, equivocated, and then decided that he preferred skirt-chasing to monogamy. Donald Trump's Apprentice Bill Rancic -- who had been under consideration for Andrew's role on Bachelor 3 -- also dated her before she realized that he was too similar to Andrew. Now she has a chance to do it her way.
