Joseph Matthew "Joe" Alwyn (born 21 February 1991) is a British actor, known for playing the titular role in the war film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk.

Early life and education

Alwyn was born and raised in Crouch End, North London. His mother is a psychotherapist and his father a documentary filmmaker. He was educated at the fee-paying City of London School and attended the National Youth Theatre. He read English and drama at the University of Bristol from 2009 to 2012. Alwyn then enrolled at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 2015, with a BA (Hons) in acting. He was cast in Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, while a final-year drama student.

Career

Alwyn has performed in several theatrical productions. In 2016, Alwyn started his career by playing the titular role of Billy Lynn in his debut war film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk directed by Ang Lee, and based on the novel of same name by Ben Fountain. The film also stars Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Steve Martin, and Chris Tucker, released on November 11, 2016 by TriStar Pictures.

Alwyn has also filmed a significant role in the drama film The Sense of an Ending along with Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling, Harriet Walter, Emily Mortimer, and Michelle Dockery. Ritesh Batra directed the film. Alwyn will also star in the psychological thriller film Keepers along with Gerard Butler.

His next major role will be in the period drama, The Favourite, helmed by Yorgos Lanthimos. In the film, Alwyn will play Masham, the love interest of Emma Stone's servant character, who uses him to advance her position in court.
