Production

On February 10, 2014, it was announced that Jennifer Aniston will play the lead in Cake. Daniel Barnz, the director, said "Of the zillions of Jennifer Aniston fans, I might be the biggest one of all. I"?ve especially loved her more dramatic performances, and I can"?t wait to watch her tackle a role that has such a brilliantly funny voice and so much raw pain (hats off to writer Patrick Tobin). I"?m honored to be collaborating with Ben, Kristin and Courtney, and it"?s exciting that Cake will be the first film under the Cinelou banner. It feels like we"?re all taking a leap of faith together, and that"?s pretty thrilling.". On March 15, the Mexican actress Adriana Barraza is also announced in the cast of the drama. The rest of the cast was revealed on April 1.

Filming, which took place in Los Angeles, began April 3, 2014 and ended May 6.

Reception

At the Toronto Film Festival Premiere, the cast received a standing ovation. Aniston and Barraza's performances have been acclaimed by the critics, being deemed "Oscar-worthy" by some critics.

Adriana Barraza's performance was acclaimed by critics. Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter suggested that Barraza could be nominee to an Oscar this year. Kenji Lloyd of Final Reel named Barraza a potential contender to this year Oscars nominations in the Supporting Actress competition. Mark Canton, one of the film's producers, commented his support to the "Oscar Buzz" for Adriana Barraza.

Most critical reviews have been mixed and it currently holds a 50% "Rotten" rating on RottenTomatoes.com with an average rating of 5.3/10. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 46 out of 100, based on 5 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews" The movie will have a limited release for one week in December in order to be in the running for the Oscars, but the date of its wide release will be in January 2015.
