R U the girl was a TV series produced by UPN. The show was a reality TV singing talent search contest for a talented person to appear on the next single of the all-female R&B band of TLC whose former member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in a car crash in Honduras in April 2002. The casting tour began on February 5 2005 in Los Angeles, with tour stops in New York, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, Atlanta, and Miami. The surviving members, Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas had the responsibility of selecting the final contestants, who will be brought to stardom with the opportunity of recording and performing live a new single with Watkins and Thomas.

Throughout the duration of the program, the requirements of hopeful applicants were: To be female, to be around the age range of 20-25 years old, considerably physically attractive, athletically fit,and have professional singing, rapping, and dancing skills. The reason was the third member will need to be identical to the profile of the other two female members of TLC.

The program was divided into seven episodes, with the eighth a finale in which the final contestant, O'so Krispie was chosen by a decision between Chilli and T-Boz between two competitors, Mirrah and O'so Krispie and later perform a new single with T-Boz and Chilli, I Bet, to a live audience on national television.

The series received some negative criticism from the press, initially being viewed as a contest to permanently "replace" Lopes in the popular singing group some years after her death. However, throughout the show's run and in several media outlets, both Watkins and Thomas stated several times that the winner of the contest would NOT be joining TLC full-time or in any way, shape or form be a "replacement" for Lisa; the winner would only provide guest vocals on a new single by the duo.
